Cary to Install Pedestrian Beacons at Ederlee Drive Crossing

Cary plans to install new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons at the Ederlee Drive pedestrian crossing this month.

The crossing is where a resident tragically lost their life in August, prompting calls for safety improvements at the location.

Town Council previously allocated up to $50,000 for the project, which Cary says has support from NCDOT.

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, often called RRFBs, are pedestrian-activated warning lights mounted on crossing signs. When a pedestrian pushes the button, the beacons flash in a rapid strobe pattern to alert drivers that someone is crossing. They are commonly used at mid-block crossings and other locations without a full traffic signal.

Mayor Harold Weinbrecht included the update in a recent town report.

The Town of Cary has been adding pedestrian safety improvements at crossings across town in recent years, particularly along corridors with heavy foot traffic near parks, greenways, and schools.
