Don’t Sleep on New York Butcher Shoppe

How exciting can a butcher’s shop really be?

Well, New York Butcher Shoppe & Wine Bar does a bit more than your standard meat cutter, as the name suggests.

Yes, you can get plenty of high-quality cuts of premium meat, including Certified Angus Beef High Choice and Prime. But you can also sit at the bar, where they have beer on tap and a selection of wine. You can also sit down for a table-service meal and take advantage of their full menu (Tuesday $1 wings, anyone?). You can shop their extensive retail space for sauces, dry goods, frozen meat, grab-and-go lunch items, local packaged food that you may recognize from the Cary Farmers Market, and more.

Hell, they even sell dog charcuterie boards.

Your dog will probably love this.

New York Butcher Shoppe & Wine Bar opened in Cary about a month ago at 1005 Portrait Dr., across from the newer Dunkin’ location, right near the corner of NW Maynard and Chapel Hill Rd. It’s a chain that started curiously in South Carolina, not New York, after the founder relocated from Brooklyn. This is the sixth location in North Carolina, and you can find their locations throughout much of the Southern states.

Despite being a chain, it is clear that they aren’t cutting any corners. The wings, smoked with Tomey’s BBQ, are some of the best wings I’ve ever had at any restaurant. The original NYBS beef sandwich, with braised shaved Certified Angus Beef, mozzarella, and spicy vegetables on a baguette, is a must-try. It’s a Philly cheesesteak’s cool cousin. Comfortingly familiar, pleasantly different.

Get the wings. Please.

Something tells me a New York butcher shop concept in CARY (Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees) is going to do very well. And they deserve to; the folks at this place know what they are doing. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. It is much more than meets the eye and not something to sleep on.
