Cary’s greenway system offers a diverse range of trails, but this April, the spotlight is on the Swift Creek Greenway. This 1.20-mile long trail starts near the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve and is mainly flat and easy to walk, making it an excellent option for individuals of all fitness levels.
The easiest way to access the Swift Creek Greenway is by parking at Harold D. Ritter Park (301 W Lochmere Dr, Cary, NC 27518). The park has plenty of parking, and also a large playground, baseball field, basketball hoops, and shaded seating if you want to spend more time in the area after exploring the greenway.
Upon entering the greenway from the park (there is a sign showcasing the entrance at the end of the parking lot), you’ll want to take a right to begin the trail. If you take a left, you’ll eventually end up on a sidewalk along Kildaire Farm Rd, which you can follow to access Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve’s entrance.
What sets the Swift Creek Greenway apart is that it’s the nation’s first greenway constructed entirely from recycled products. The road is made with recycled asphalt, demonstrating the town’s commitment to sustainable practices and reducing the environmental impact.
Walking, jogging, or biking on this trail offers visitors the chance to enjoy the beauty of nature while also learning about the benefits of eco-friendly construction. Along the path, you’ll get a glimpse of the creek that the greenway is named after, peacefully flowing and adding to the overall experience.
While April is an opportune time to celebrate Earth Day and highlight the importance of preserving our planet, the Swift Creek Greenway’s value goes beyond just one day. It’s a trail that embodies the town’s commitment to sustainability and offers visitors the chance to learn and appreciate the natural world.
The Swift Creek Greenway is an excellent option for those looking for an easy shaded trail. Its use of recycled products in its construction sets it apart from other greenways, and its location near the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve offers visitors a chance to enjoy the beauty of Cary’s natural surroundings.
