A Runner’s Guide to Cary’s Greenway System

Cary’s 80+ miles of greenways make it one of the best towns in the Triangle for runners. From quick morning jogs to 20-mile marathon training runs, the network of paved trails links neighborhoods, lakes, and parks in a way that feels almost endless. Here’s a distance-based guide to planning your next run.

Short Loops (1–3 miles) — For Beginners or Quick Runs

Swift Creek Loop Trail (0.8 miles)
Located down the steps at Hemlock Bluffs, this trail is a flat loop through the woods with a mix of bridges and natural flooring. Do as many loops as you want to get your milage goal!

Cary Park Lake Greenway (1.9 miles)
This scenic greenway is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. There is no traditional parking, but it connects to Mills Park. Paved, flat, and scenic.

Moderate Runs (3–6 miles) — For Building Consistency

Black Creek Greenway from Bond Park (5 miles out-and-back)
Start at Bond Park and follow the Black Creek Greenway toward Lake Crabtree. The paved, shaded route winds through forests, sidewalks, and hills. Turn around whenever you’re halfway done.

White Oak Creek Greenway (4–6 miles)
Start at Green Hope Elementary trailhead and head east. The wetlands boardwalk sections are especially beautiful, and you can easily adjust mileage by turning back early.

Long Runs (6–14 miles) — For Distance Training

White Oak Creek Greenway to American Tobacco Trail (14-15 miles)
Start at Bond Park, head onto White Oak Creek greenway, run until you reach the ATT near New Hope Church Road and then turn back around. It’s a smooth, mostly flat route that’s perfect for a supported long run.

Marathon Prep (13–20+ miles) — For Serious Training

American Tobacco Trail Long Haul (13–20+ miles)
Park at 2584 New Hope Church Rd and log as many miles as needed on the ATT. The crushed stone surface is softer on joints and ideal for 16–20 mile long runs. Expect many other runners on this trail.

Tips for Runners

  • Water: Bond Park, American Tobacco Trail’s New Hope Church Rd’s parking lot, and many parks along White Oak Creek Greenway have fountains. Bring a handheld for longer routes.
  • Safety: Greenways are closed before sunrise and after sunset. Plan accordingly.
  • Etiquette: Keep right, announce passes, and leash dogs. Cyclists share many routes.

Get out there!

Cary’s greenways make it possible to train for anything from your first 5K to a full marathon without leaving town. Mix and match loops, use parks as anchors, and you can keep every run fresh.
