GoCary is expanding on November 1st, while remaining fare-free. With two brand-new routes and a realignment near Crossroads, the system is tightening the weave between Cary, Apex, and key Raleigh destinations. If you’re a student, commuter, or weekend errand-runner, here’s what changes, and how to make the most of it on day one.
What’s new
Route 2: Cary ↔ NC State / State Fairgrounds
A direct, practical link from downtown Cary to NC State University and the State Fairgrounds via North Harrison, NE Maynard, Chapel Hill Rd, Corporate Center Dr (check out Drive Shack, a Top Golf-like venue), and Trinity Rd. 38 stops total. It lines up game-day and State Fair trips with far less parking drama (unfortunately, this won’t be live until next year’s State Fair).
Route 9: Cary ↔ Apex (local service)
What used to be the Apex–Cary Express becomes an all-day local line with 34 stops. This is particularly great as it will allow both Apex and Cary residents to bus into each other’s respective downtown without worrying about parking. It ties neatly into GoApex Route 1 and GoTriangle 305, so you can hop further into Apex or out toward the regional network without a car.
Service pattern (both routes):
- Mon–Sat: every 30 minutes, 6:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.; then hourly until 10:00 p.m.
- Sun: hourly, 7:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.
Route 1: Crossroads realignment
To better serve the Crossroads area, Route 1 gains three stops on Crossroads Blvd and one on Jones Franklin near Sheetz, and shares stops with GoTriangle 305 along Dillard Dr. Three inbound stops on Dillard Dr are removed (Dillard at Walnut, at Columbus, and at Jones Franklin).
Who benefits first
- NC State students, staff, and game-day crowds: Route 2 is the straightforward link Cary has needed. Expect smoother trips to classes, PNC area events, and the State Fair (starting next year!).
- Apex-Cary commuters, errand-runners, and bar hoppers: Route 9’s stop density will make this route much more usable for many folks.
- Riders with mobility needs: New and upgraded stops will meet ADA standards, with lighting added where feasible, and dozens of existing pads get improvements.
