Park Feature: Lake Crabtree Country Park Offers a Beautiful Wilderness Escape

Located between Morrisville, Cary and Raleigh, Lake Crabtree Country Park has much to offer for residents of the area.

The 520-acre park contains volleyball courts, hiking trails, playgrounds, biking trails, boat rentals, and the beautiful landscaping you’ve come to expect from the Wake County park system.

Entrance to the 6 mile Lake Trail

Lake Crabtree Country Park is open year around, only closing on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. The park opens daily at 8:00 AM and closes at sunset.

One of the many appeals of Lake Crabtree Country Park is that you can easily spend an entire day here, or just go for a short stroll. The 6 mile Lake Trail takes you out of the park and around the lake intersecting with several other Cary greenways and takes an average of 2.5 – 3 hours to complete according to the official Wake County website. Our tests revealed that it takes closer to 3.5 hours, but included in those hours were several pauses to appreciate the beauty of the trail.

The trail is mostly flat, but there are some areas that are narrow, including one portion that is next to (but separated) from a busy road with lots of rocks and roots to avoid. Those with small children or have difficulty with mobility may want to stick with the smaller trails inside the park.

While all pets are required to be leashed, this is a great park to bring your dog to get some exercise done. There are plenty of wildlife, plants, and views to keep things interesting, and it is quiet enough where they won’t be easily distracted.
