Daisy’s Tails of Cary is a column celebrating dog-friendly places, businesses, and establishments around Cary, NC – written from the perspective of Daisy, my dog. You can read more of them here.
Hi friends! It’s me, Daisy, official canine correspondent for The Cary Report. Today, I’m wagging my tail extra hard because I get to tell you all about one of my favorite places in the whole world: the Downtown Cary Dog Park, also called the Backyard!

My humans love it too, because the park is right next to the Bark Bar! While we are running, wrestling, and living our best off-leash lives, our humans can sip a cold beer or a glass of wine. It’s like their enjoying their own version of fetch, only theirs comes in pint glasses.
The park is fully fenced in, so you can run as fast as your paws will carry you without your human yelling, “Daisy, come back!” (Not that I ever ignore them, of course… okay, maybe once or twice.) There are two sections; one for small dogs like my tiny but mighty friends, and one for bigger dogs who like to stretch their legs.

There’s plenty of room to play fetch, chase new buddies, or just lounge in the shade while humans talk about things that are way less interesting than squirrels. Speaking of squirrels… there aren’t any in the fenced area, but I swear I’ve spotted a few watching us from the trees, probably jealous of all the fun we’re having.
There are also fountains that spray water up, which is perfect for cooling off after a big game of chase. I like to trot right through them when it is hot out, and sometimes I just stand there and let the water splash on my paws. They are also great for filling up a water bowl so no one goes home thirsty.

Water bowls? Check. Benches for humans (and tired pups)? Check. A double-gate entry so no one makes a surprise break for it? Check. It’s like they thought of everything.
My human says it is pretty affordable to come here all the time. An annual pass for one dog is $40 if you live in Cary or $55 if you do not. If you have more than one dog, it is $60 for residents or $80 for nonresidents. You can also just get a day pass for $5 if you want to try it out for the day. You can check out pass information here.
One important note for planning your playdates. The Barkyard is closed the second Wednesday of each month and every fourth Wednesday from April to November from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. for routine maintenance.
So, if you haven’t been yet, tell your human to grab your leash and head over to the “Backyard” at Downtown Cary Park, all the way at the end of the park (here it is on Google Maps). The library parking deck (113 Walnut St, Cary, NC 27511) is just a short stroll away from the dog park and the best place to park. Just make sure to wag at me if you see me there! I’ll be the one with the big goofy grin and dirt on my nose.
