E-Bikes Allowed on Cary Greenways Permanently: What You Should Know

After a multi-year pilot program and community feedback, e-bikes are now officially allowed on Cary’s greenways.

The Town of Cary first launched an e-bike pilot in 2022 to test the feasibility of allowing electric bikes on the town’s 90-plus miles of greenways. In November 2024, the pilot was deemed successful, and the local ordinance was updated (34-15(b)) to permanently allow e-bikes.

What are the rules?

While e-bikes are now permitted, there are specific guidelines riders must follow:

  • E-bikes must not exceed 15 MPH
  • The motor may only engage when the rider is pedaling
  • Riders must announce themselves when passing pedestrians by saying something like “on your left”
  • Pedestrians, including walkers and runners, always have the right of way
  • Stay to the right side of the greenway unless passing
  • Motorized vehicles without pedals, such as mopeds or electric scooters, are not allowed

Why it matters?

From forming a bike committee to having 13 current active greenway projects, Cary is clearly encouraging residents to explore the extensive network it has built. While traditional bicycles work for many, e-bikes offer more accessibility. They allow people with mobility issues to keep pace, and for others, they provide a low-effort alternative to biking that still gets you outside. In the North Carolina summer heat, the ability to arrive somewhere without breaking a sweat can make a big difference

Where should you go?

With more than 90 miles of greenways, Cary offers plenty of scenic and practical routes for e-bike riders. A few standout options include:

White Oak Creek Greenway
One of the most popular trails in Cary, this long and mostly flat path connects to the American Tobacco Trail, making it ideal for longer rides.

Black Creek Greenway
A shaded, tree-lined route that runs from Lake Crabtree through North Cary Park and beyond. A great choice for both commuting and recreation.

Swift Creek Greenway
Tucked away near Lochmere, this scenic trail runs along the banks of Swift Creek and offers a peaceful ride through wooded areas and wetlands.

You can view a map of all of the Cary greenways here. The Triangle Greenspace App (available on iOS and Android) allows you to quickly see and map out routes of all of Cary’s greenways. This can be particularly handy if you’re exploring a new area!

E-bikes open up a lot of possibilities for getting around Cary without a car, whether you’re commuting, running errands, or just out for a ride. With so many greenways to choose from and more on the way, it’s a great time to hop on and see where the trail takes you.
